I have a project outside the DMS, with proprietory information - stuff that can't be shared publicly. Is the DMS for me?

Sure. You can create a Private Project that is only accessible by your team members. If you run into a question that you think the community may be able to answer, you can post that specific question to the Open Discussion (leaving out the proprietary information of course) and the community will help answer.
